Food!

A few weeks before Christmas, Matt and I bought some food to attempt to make our own baby food for Rowan. We bought whatever produce was on sale that week at the store and ended up with sweet potatoes, carrots and pears. My sister had bought me a baby food book last year so I gathered it and the supplies necessary to start. After reading research and talking to our pediatrician, I kept hearing the whole idea of starting veggies first wasn't proven to make a difference in how picky of an eater they are. However some moms I work with swear that eating only veggies first ensured their kids ate everything. Who knows... We decided to make both and see how things played out. They sell a lot of tools to help making baby food but we just used what we had. I figured if this was suppose to be the cheaper option, it would be silly to go buy a lot of gear to get the job done. The book of recipes that we have gives precise amounts of water and fruit ratios that you can boil /cook the produce in. Then you can add everything to the blender for it to be the right consistency without wasting any of the cooking water, which has nutrients from cooking the produce. So I boiled the carrots and poured the water and carrots into the blender and in a minute it was a nice puree. Then it got poured into ice cube trays and frozen. I figured since it had a lot of water content it would freeze fast. This was not true, it took overnight for them to set and not be tacky. Then we dumped them into freezer bags and stored them away. Overall super easy, much to my delight.

We gave Ro sweet potatoes first. She had no clue what to do with a spoon and we were almost just wiping her lips with food and she was licking her lips. She only made one classic surprised baby food face, the rest of the time she seemed to enjoy it. We only fed her while she seemed curious/interested, which was about half an ice cubes worth.

Day 2 however was a totally different story. She actually opened her mouth and was diving forward towards the spoon. She ate 2 ice cubes worth that day and was getting so excited about her food. We got video of both encounters and they are pretty classic. It is fun to see her so interested and happy about eating.

Since then we have fed her carrots, avocado, green pepper, peas, apples, bananas and also those puffs. We waiting to see if she could pick them up and bring them to her mouth but she hasn't figured out that concept yet. Instead she opens her mouth and flaps her arms and waits for us to give her one....almost like a little birdie. It's pretty cute. To date she hates anything sweet and loves all her veggies. What a weirdo. :) Worst faces have come from pears and bananas. Avocado was a big hit and the others she has been indifferent about.

First meal in the Bumbo, sweet potatoes!

Bananas at first, fun to play with and squish around....

Oh, that's what they taste like?!

 Happy after carrots
